PLASMA FACIAL | BIRKENHEAD, AUCKLAND
If your hair is thinning, PRP is one of the more evidence-supported options worth understanding.
Hair loss affects confidence in ways that are hard to put into words. Whether it is gradual thinning, a receding hairline, or increased shedding, it is worth understanding what your options actually are rather than navigating the volume of products and claims in this space. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses growth factors concentrated from your own blood to support the scalp environment and follicle health. The evidence base for its use in androgenetic alopecia is increasingly strong. Results vary between individuals and are not guaranteed. A proper assessment before treatment is mandatory. PRP is used as part of a structured hair programme, not a single-session solution.

HOW PRP HAIR TREATMENT WORKS
Your own growth factors, concentrated and returned to the scalp.
A small blood sample is drawn, typically two tubes. This is processed in a centrifuge that separates and concentrates the platelets and their associated growth factors from the rest of the blood. The resulting platelet-rich plasma is then injected into targeted areas of the scalp where thinning or reduced density is occurring.
The growth factors in PRP are thought to support the hair follicle environment by encouraging cell activity and supporting follicles in their natural growth cycle. The mechanism is biological rather than chemical. Nothing foreign is introduced. Because it uses your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low.
Results develop gradually over several months rather than appearing immediately. Most clients require an initial course of sessions before seeing meaningful changes. Individual response varies significantly depending on the cause and extent of hair loss, age, and overall health.
Blood draw
Two tubes of blood drawn from the arm. Takes approximately five minutes.
Centrifuge processing
Blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets and growth factors.
Scalp mapping and injection
PRP is injected into targeted areas of the scalp using a fine needle at approximately one centimetre intervals.
Microneedling (where included)
In the Better and Best tiers, microneedling is performed to create channels that support PRP absorption and trigger additional scalp healing response.
What clients commonly notice
Androgenetic alopecia
The most common form of hair loss, pattern thinning driven by genetic and hormonal factors. The strongest evidence base for PRP use exists for this type of hair loss.
Hair thinning associated with hormonal changes
Changes in hormone levels, including those associated with post-partum periods, menopause, or hormonal fluctuation, can contribute to diffuse thinning that may respond to PRP over a course of treatment.
Hair loss associated with stress or nutritional factors
Where the underlying cause is being addressed, PRP may support the scalp environment during recovery. Suitability depends on assessment.
Post-hair transplant support
PRP may be used to support recovery and follicle health following a hair transplant procedure. Discussed at consultation.
Diffuse thinning without complete follicle loss
PRP works best where follicles are still present but underperforming. Once follicles are fully lost, PRP cannot restore them.
Not all hair loss responds to PRP. The cause and extent of your hair loss is assessed at consultation. If PRP is unlikely to make a meaningful difference for your specific situation, that will be communicated honestly before any treatment is recommended.
HOW WE WORK WITH YOU
Prepare. Stimulate. Support.
Hair loss is influenced by multiple factors. PRP hair treatment works best as part of a structured programme that addresses more than a single session and considers the full picture of what is driving the loss.
PREPARE
Preparing the scalp to optimise how it responds to treatment. This includes assessing baseline scalp condition, discussing home care, and identifying any contributing health or lifestyle factors.
STIMULATE
Using PRP, designed to stimulate the scalp environment and aim to support follicle health. The goal is to encourage the hair growth cycle from within, gradually and over a structured course of sessions.
SUPPORT
Ongoing care to support and maintain the scalp environment over time. This includes home care guidance, maintenance sessions, and monitoring progress across the programme.
Hair loss is influenced by multiple factors. PRP is used as part of a structured programme that may include ongoing sessions, home care, and addressing contributing factors alongside in-clinic treatment.

IMPORTANT: Lipidemia sitting fee
If lipidemia (excess fat in the blood causing cloudy blood) is identified after the blood draw and renders the PRP sample unsuitable for use, a $200 sitting fee applies and is payable on the day. If a suitable alternative treatment of equal or greater value can be safely performed during the same appointment, this fee is waived. This will be discussed at your consultation.
Not sure which tier is right for your hair loss situation? A consultation is the starting point. Your Registered Nurse will assess your scalp, discuss your history, and give you an honest view of what approach is likely to be most appropriate.
RECCOMENDED TREATMENT SCHEDULE
An initial course of three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is the standard starting point for most clients. Maintenance sessions every four to six months are typically recommended to support ongoing results. The appropriate schedule for your situation is discussed at your consultation based on your assessment.
POST-TREATMENT CARE
Looking after your scalp after PRP
PRP has minimal downtime. These guidelines help support your scalp’s recovery and the effectiveness of each session.
No hair washing for 48 hours
Avoid washing your hair for at least 48 hours after treatment to allow the PRP to settle and be absorbed into the scalp.
Gentle, sulfate-free products only
When resuming washing, use gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Avoid harsh or stripping haircare products.
No chemical treatments for 1 week
Avoid hair colouring, perming, or chemical treatments for at least one week following treatment.
Limit heat styling
Avoid high-heat styling tools where possible in the days following treatment to minimise stress on the scalp.
Scalp sun protection
Protect your scalp from direct sun by wearing a hat or using SPF formulated for the scalp where the hairline is exposed.
Stay well hydrated
Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet in the days following treatment to support recovery.
WHAT TO EXPECT DAYS AFTER
Mild redness, tenderness, and swelling at the injection sites is normal and typically settles within 24 to 48 hours. Some clients notice a temporary increase in shedding in the early stages of treatment. This is a known response and generally settles as the course progresses.
Results from PRP develop gradually over several months, not immediately after treatment. Most clients do not notice significant changes after a single session. Improvement tends to accumulate across the course of treatment, with the most notable changes often apparent three to six months after beginning. Individual response varies significantly.
If you have questions or concerns after treatment, call 09 418 0743. Checking in is always welcome.
CLINICAL EVIDENCE
Referenced clinical studies
The following studies are referenced for transparency and to support informed decision-making. They are independent published research, not manufacturer claims, and are provided so clients can review the evidence base themselves.
Clinical evidence available on request. Results reported in studies may not reflect individual outcomes. Individual results vary.
PUBLISHED STUDY
Randomised placebo-controlled study of PRP in androgenetic alopecia
Gentile P, Garcovich S et al. | July 2015 | 23 male patients
Patients received three monthly PRP sessions versus a saline placebo. The PRP group showed a significant increase in hair density and follicular units. The treatment was assessed as well tolerated with no serious adverse events reported in the study period.
As reported in this study, PRP was associated with improvements in hair density compared to placebo. Individual results vary.
PUBLISHED STUDY
Comparative study of PRP versus minoxidil in male pattern hair loss
Gkini MA et al. | April 2014 | 40 male patients
Patients were treated with PRP (three sessions) versus 5% minoxidil applied daily for six months. The PRP group showed faster and more noticeable improvement in hair density as reported in the study. Limitations of the study size and design are noted by the authors.
As reported in this study, PRP showed comparable or greater improvement in hair density than minoxidil for early-stage hair loss. Individual results vary and this finding may not apply to all patients.
PUBLISHED STUDY
Efficacy of autologous PRP in female androgenetic alopecia
Alves R, Grimalt R | October 2016 | 10 female patients
Ten female patients received three monthly PRP sessions. At six-month review, noticeable improvement in hair density and reduced shedding was reported. The authors noted the treatment as hormone-free and well tolerated across the small study group.
As reported in this study, PRP was associated with improvement in hair density in female-pattern hair loss. The small sample size limits broader conclusions. Individual results vary.
Nature of the procedure: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autologous procedure using your own blood. It is not a Medsafe-registered medicine in New Zealand, meaning it has not been registered for a specific therapeutic purpose. PRP is used as a health service to support scalp health and follicle activity.
Realistic expectations: PRP works by utilising the growth factors in your own platelets to support a natural biological response. Results are not immediate and typically develop over several months. Many clients experience improvements in hair thickness and density, but individual results vary significantly based on biological factors, the cause and extent of hair loss, age, and lifestyle. There is a risk that treatment may not produce the desired outcome.
Known risks: Common side effects include localised swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites, which typically settle within 24 to 48 hours. As with any procedure involving skin penetration, there is a minor risk of infection. Because PRP uses your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low.
Mandatory consultation: A clinical assessment by a Registered Nurse is mandatory before treatment. PRP is not suitable for individuals with certain blood disorders, active infections, or those who are pregnant. All contraindications are assessed at your consultation.
Lipidemia: If lipidemia is identified after the blood draw and renders the sample unsuitable, a $200 sitting fee applies and is payable on the day. This is waived if a suitable alternative treatment of equal or greater value can be performed at the same appointment.
RESULTS DISCLAMER
Results from PRP hair treatment vary depending on individual factors including the cause and extent of hair loss, age, overall health, and consistency of the treatment schedule. Outcomes are not guaranteed and individual results will differ. All treatment decisions are made following a clinical assessment by a Registered Nurse.

Published clinical research supports PRP as a useful approach for androgenetic alopecia and hair thinning in both men and women. Results vary significantly depending on the cause and extent of hair loss, age, overall health, and consistency of treatment. PRP is not effective for all types of hair loss, and outcomes are not guaranteed. A proper assessment is needed to determine whether PRP is likely to be beneficial for your specific situation.
Most clients start with an initial course of three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Results develop gradually over several months. Maintenance sessions every four to six months are typically recommended to support ongoing results. The appropriate schedule for your situation is discussed at your consultation.
Some clients notice a temporary increase in shedding in the early stages of treatment. This is a known response associated with the hair cycle reset process. It typically settles as the course progresses. Your nurse will explain what to expect at your consultation.
