DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING | BIRKENHEAD, AUCKLAND
If your skin concerns haven’t shifted, microneedling may be worth understanding.
Acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and fine lines are among the most common reasons people come to us having tried other things first. Microneedling works at a deeper level than surface skincare can reach. It is designed to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity from within. At Jay’s Medispa in Birkenhead, we use Dermapen, a well-published microneedling device, administered by a Registered Nurse at every session.

HOW DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING WORKS

Designed to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity.
Microneedling uses a device fitted with fine needles to create controlled, precise micro-channels in the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries are designed to trigger the skin’s natural healing response, supporting the production of collagen and elastin with less downtime than more intensive resurfacing options.
The depth and speed of the needles are adjusted at every session based on your skin and the area being treated. This precision matters. The same device settings are not appropriate for every client or every area. Your Registered Nurse makes these decisions at your appointment based on what they see.
Where serums or additional treatments are included in the tier selected, these are applied following needling, when the micro-channels allow for deeper uptake of active ingredients into the skin.
We use Dermapen, an extensively published microneedling device in clinical aesthetic practice. Needle depth and serum selection are tailored to your skin at every session. Outcomes vary between individuals.
What clients commonly notice
Acne scarring
Atrophic (indented) acne scars may respond to repeated courses of microneedling. The degree of improvement varies depending on the depth and type of scarring.
Uneven skin texture
Surface roughness, enlarged pores, and congested skin texture may show gradual improvement across a course of treatment.
Fine lines and early signs of skin ageing
Supporting collagen production from within may contribute to gradual improvement in fine lines over a course of sessions.
Dull or uneven skin tone
Supporting cellular turnover from repeated treatments may contribute to a brighter, more even complexion over time.
Stretch marks
Microneedling may be used as part of a broader approach to stretch mark appearance. Outcomes are variable and discussed at consultation.
Skin that hasn’t responded to surface treatments
If you’ve tried creams, peels, or facials without the change you were hoping for, microneedling works at a deeper level and may be worth exploring.

POST-TREATMENT CARE
Looking after your skin after microneedling
The days following treatment are important for your skin’s recovery and for getting the best from each session. These guidelines apply to all microneedling tiers.
No touching, rubbing, or pressure
Avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated area for 24 hours. Keep hands away from the face.
Gentle cleansing only for 24 to 48 hours
Use only a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid any exfoliants, acids, or active ingredients for at least one week post-treatment.
SPF 50+ every day for 7 days
Post-needling skin is significantly more sensitive to UV. Apply SPF 50+ daily regardless of cloud cover for at least seven days after treatment.
No exercise, saunas, or heat for 24 to 48 hours
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers for 24 to 48 hours. Heat increases inflammation and can extend recovery time.
No makeup for 24 hours
Avoid applying makeup for at least 24 hours, or until redness and sensitivity have settled.
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water and use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser frequently to support the skin’s recovery during the days following treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE DAYS AFTER
Redness, warmth, and mild sensitivity immediately after treatment are normal and typically settle within 24 to 48 hours. Some clients experience mild swelling or tightness on the day. Light flaking or dryness in the days following is also common as the skin renews.
Results develop gradually. Most clients do not notice significant changes after the first session. Improvement tends to accumulate across the course, with the most noticeable changes often apparent after the third or fourth session and continuing to develop over the weeks that follow. Individual response varies.
If anything feels unexpected after treatment, call us on 09 418 0743. We would rather you check in than sit with a concern.
EXPECTED SIDE EFFECTS
Redness and warmth for 24 to 48 hours
Mild swelling on the day of treatment
Skin sensitivity for 1 to 3 days
Light flaking or dryness during recovery
Mild pinpoint bruising in some areas

This randomized clinical study evaluated Dermapen microneedling for atrophic acne scars in 60 patients across three groups: Dermapen alone, Jessner’s solution peeling alone, and the two combined. Patients were assessed using the Goodman and Baron qualitative grading system before and after treatment. The Dermapen-only group demonstrated significant clinical improvement, with boxcar scars responding best across all groups.

Frequently asked questions
Anything else? Come in for a consultation and we’ll walk you through everything in person.
Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries that may help support the skin’s natural collagen and elastin activity. It is used to address acne scarring, uneven skin texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, and dull or uneven skin tone. The degree of improvement varies between individuals and depends on the severity of the concern, skin type, and the number of sessions completed.
Most clients start with a course of thee to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin concern, its severity, and how your skin responds across the course of treatment. Outcomes develop gradually. Most noticeable improvement tends to accumulate after the third or fourth session. Your nurse will advise a realistic plan at your consultation.
A topical numbing cream can be applied before treatment and left on for approximately 15 minutes. Most clients find the treatment well tolerated with the numbing in place. Some areas, such as around the nose or jawline, may feel more sensitive. If you are particularly sensitive, let your nurse know and they will adjust accordingly.
Sessions typically take 60 to 75 minutes depending on the tier selected, excluding approximately 15 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect before treatment begins. Please allow 75 minutes for the Best tier appointment.
Most clients experience redness and sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours following treatment. Some mild swelling on the day and light flaking in the following days is also common. Most clients return to normal activities the next day. We recommend avoiding social or professional commitments where you need to look your best on the day of treatment.
Yes. Microneedling can be combined with other treatments including Mesoestetic dermal peels, Plasma Facials, and Exo-Skin depending on your skin goals and the timing between appointments. Some combinations work well together; others are better separated by a few weeks. Your nurse will advise what makes sense for your skin at your consultation.
Microneedling pricing at Jay’s Medispa in Birkenhead starts from $300 per session for microneedling only, $380 with an Active MG Serum, and $630 for the full option including EXO-Skin and LED light.
