PELVIC FLOOR STRENGNTHING FOR WOMEN | BIRKENHEAD, AUCKLAND
You’ve probably been putting off talking about this for longer than you should.
Most women do. Bladder leaks, urgency, changes after having children, shifts through menopause. These are things that get quietly managed rather than addressed, often for years. It does not mean they are not worth addressing. Emsella is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused electromagnetic energy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles from the outside in. You sit in a treatment chair, fully clothed, for 28 minutes. Nothing is removed. Nothing is touched. The conversation before and after is private and handled without any judgement. That is the whole thing.

MORE COMMON THANK YOU THINK
One in three women experience this. Most never seek help.
That number comes from published research, not marketing copy. Pelvic floor weakness affects a significant proportion of women across all life stages: in their twenties after childbirth, in their forties through hormonal changes, in their fifties and beyond as menopause shifts muscle tone. The experience varies enormously, but the silence around it is remarkably consistent.
There is no version of this where you are unusual, dramatic, or overreacting. If it is affecting your daily life, including in ways that feel too small to mention, it is worth a conversation.
Things women carry quietly
Leaking when laughing, sneezing, coughing, jumping, or exercising
Urgency that is hard to manage, needing to plan around bathrooms
Waking in the night needing to use the toilet more often than before
Feeling less confident in movement, avoiding exercise, social situations, or intimacy
Changes after having children that physio alone hasn’t fully resolved
Reduced sensation or comfort during intimacy
Feeling embarrassed to mention any of the above to anyone
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS
A step-by-step walk through your first visit and every session after.
One of the things that helps most with anxiety about any treatment is knowing exactly what to expect before you arrive. Here is what happens, step by step, with nothing left out.
You book a consultation: a conversation, not an examination
The first appointment is a private conversation with a Registered Nurse. It is not a physical examination. You will be asked about what you are experiencing, your general health, and your goals. The nurse will explain how Emsella works and whether it is likely to be appropriate for your situation. You can ask any question you want. Nothing is assumed and nothing is rushed.
You do not need to know medical terminology. You can simply say “I leak when I sneeze” or “I feel like things aren’t where they used to be.” That is enough to start the conversation.
You arrive for your first treatment. No preparation needed.
You arrive at the clinic as you normally would. No preparation is required beforehand. No fasting, no topical cream, no special clothing. Whatever you are wearing to the clinic is what you will be wearing during treatment. You will be shown to the treatment room and met by your nurse.
Nothing needs to be removed. Not your clothes, not your underwear. You sit down exactly as you arrived.
You sit in the Emsella chair. Fully clothed, the whole time.
The Emsella device is a chair. You sit on it in your clothes. Your nurse will position you correctly and explain what you are about to feel before the session starts. The device sits beneath you and delivers focused electromagnetic energy through the seat. Your pelvic floor muscles respond to this energy by contracting, which is exactly what the treatment is designed to do.
The nurse stays close during treatment. If anything feels too intense or unexpected, just say so. The intensity can be adjusted immediately. You are in control of the session.
What it feels like during the 28 minutes
You will feel a strong tingling sensation and muscle contractions in the pelvic floor area. It is noticeably different from anything you will have felt before. The contractions are deep and repeated, at a rate and intensity that voluntary pelvic floor exercises cannot produce. Most women describe it as intense but manageable. Some find it surprisingly tolerable from the first session. Others need a session or two to get used to the sensation.
The sensation is not painful for most clients. Intense, yes. But the same way a workout is intense rather than painful. Many women read, use their phone, or simply rest during the 28 minutes.
After the session. Straight back to your day.
When the 28 minutes are done, you stand up and leave. There is no recovery time, no redness to manage, nothing to avoid. Mild muscle soreness in the pelvic floor area is common in the hours after, similar to what you might feel after exercise. This is normal and settles quickly. You can drive, return to work, care for children, or do anything else you had planned.
Nobody will be able to tell you have just had treatment. Nothing will look different. You just continue with your day.
Over the course. What to notice and when.
The standard course is 6 sessions over 3 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. Most women begin noticing initial changes around the second or third session, perhaps a little less urgency, or noticing a difference in certain situations that were previously a concern. The most significant improvements typically become apparent four to six weeks after completing the full course, as the muscles continue to strengthen and adapt. Individual response varies and outcomes are not guaranteed.
Results develop gradually. It is worth completing the full course before making an assessment. Changes in pelvic floor strength take time to become apparent in daily life.
CONCERNS THIS TREATMENT MAY HELP WITH
The experiences that bring most women here.
Each of these concerns is common, addressable, and worth discussing. Suitability for Emsella depends on the individual situation and is confirmed at your consultation.
Bladder leaks and urgency
Leaking when laughing, sneezing, coughing, or exercising. Urgency that makes you plan your day around bathrooms. These are the most common reasons women come in, and the ones that published research most strongly supports Emsella for.
HOW IT MAY HELP
Strengthening weakened pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder
Improving neuromuscular control for better continence
Reducing the frequency and severity of leaks in daily movement
Post-childbirth recovery
Vaginal delivery stretches and weakens the pelvic floor. The impact varies and is not always immediately obvious. Some women notice effects months or years later. Physiotherapy is valuable, and Emsella can complement it rather than replace it.
HOW IT MAY HELP
Re-engaging stretched or weakened pelvic floor muscles
Supporting postnatal recovery in a safe, non-invasive way
Working alongside physiotherapy as part of a broader recovery plan
Menopausal changes
The drop in oestrogen during perimenopause and menopause affects the tone and elasticity of pelvic floor muscles, often without warning. Changes in bladder control, core stability, and intimate comfort can all follow. This is hormonal and structural, not a failure of anything you have or haven’t done.
HOW IT MAY HELP
Counteracting natural age and hormone-related muscle weakening
Improving stability and core support as the body changes
Supporting confidence in movement and daily life
Intimate sensation changes
Reduced pelvic floor tone can affect blood flow, muscle engagement, and sensation during intimacy. This is rarely discussed but commonly experienced. It is not something to accept as permanent, and it is worth raising in a consultation where the conversation is handled with complete respect.
HOW IT MAY HELP
Improving muscle tone and circulation in the pelvic floor region
Supporting improved responsiveness and physical comfort
Many women report positive changes in intimate experience after treatment
TREATMENT SCHEDULE
What the course looks like from start to finish.
The standard course is six sessions across three weeks. This schedule is based on published clinical research into how HIFEM energy builds and sustains pelvic floor muscle strength over time.
INTIAL COURSE
6 sessions over 3 weeks
Two sessions per week, at least 48 hours apart. The progressive schedule is important. Each session builds on the muscle response from the last. An 8-session course is available for more significant symptoms or where a longer initial programme would be beneficial.
WHEN TO NOTICE CHANGES
Sessions 2 to 3 onwards
Most women begin noticing early changes mid-course. Peak improvement typically becomes apparent four to six weeks after completing the full course. Results develop gradually as the muscles continue to strengthen. Individual response varies.
MAINTENANCE
Every 3 to 6 months
A single maintenance session every 3 to 6 months is recommended to sustain results. One maintenance session is included in all packages. Your nurse will advise the right frequency based on your response and goals.
Sessions 2 to 3

CLINICAL EVIDENCE
Referenced clinical studies
The following studies are referenced for transparency and to support informed decision-making. They are independent published research, not manufacturer claims, and are provided so clients can review the evidence base themselves.
Clinical evidence available on request. Results reported in studies may not reflect individual outcomes. Individual results vary.
PUBLISHED STUDY
Clinical efficacy of HIFEM in treating stress urinary incontinence in women
Samuels JB et al. | July 2019 | 75 women | 6 sessions over 3 weeks
Seventy-five women with stress urinary incontinence received a 6-session Emsella course. The study reported that 95% of participants reported improved quality of life, and 67% experienced a complete resolution of incontinence symptoms during the study period. The treatment was assessed as well tolerated.
As reported in this study, HIFEM was associated with meaningful improvements in urinary incontinence for a significant proportion of participants. Individual outcomes vary.
PUBLISHED STUDY
MRI-based analysis of pelvic muscle structure after HIFEM in women
Bianchi S et al. | August 2020 | 16 women | MRI analysis before and after course
Sixteen women underwent pelvic MRI scans before and after completing a 6-session Emsella course. The study reported significant increases in levator ani muscle thickness and measurable structural elevation of the pelvic floor. These physical changes in the muscle were confirmed by objective imaging.
As reported in this study, Emsella was associated with measurable physical changes in pelvic support muscle structure. These structural findings align with the clinical improvements reported by participants. Individual outcomes vary.
Results are not guaranteed: Emsella is designed to support pelvic floor muscle strengthening. Outcomes vary between individuals depending on the nature and severity of the concern, age, overall health, and consistency of treatment.
FDA clearance: Emsella is FDA-cleared for the treatment of urinary incontinence. This indicates the device has met safety and effectiveness standards for its indicated use. It does not guarantee individual outcomes.
Consultation required: A clinical assessment by a Registered Nurse is required before treatment. This ensures Emsella is appropriate for your situation and that all contraindications are identified before any session begins.
Contraindications: Emsella is not suitable if you have a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, metal implants in the pelvic area, are currently pregnant, or have certain other medical conditions. All contraindications are assessed at your consultation.
Complementing other treatments: Emsella may be used alongside physiotherapy. It is not a replacement for medical care where that is indicated. If you are under the care of a physiotherapist or specialist for pelvic floor concerns, mention this at your consultation.
RESULTS DSICLAMER
Results from Emsella treatment vary depending on the nature and severity of the concern, age, overall health, and adherence to the recommended treatment schedule. Outcomes are not guaranteed and individual results will differ. All treatment decisions are made following a clinical assessment by a Registered Nurse.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
These are the questions that come up most. If something isn’t covered here, ask at your consultation. No question is too small or too awkward.
No. You remain fully clothed throughout the entire session. Nothing is removed, not your clothing, not your underwear. No part of the body is touched, examined, or exposed at any point during treatment. You sit on the treatment chair in whatever you arrived in. The HIFEM energy works through clothing to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles beneath.
The nurse who handles your consultation has these conversations regularly. There is no version of what you might say that would be unusual, surprising, or uncomfortable for them to hear. You don’t need to have the right words. You can simply describe what you experience in your own language and your nurse will take it from there. The conversation stays entirely between you and your nurse.
Yes. Post-childbirth pelvic floor weakness is one of the most common reasons women come in. It can occur regardless of when delivery happened. Some women notice effects years later. Emsella can complement physiotherapy as part of recovery. Suitability and timing are confirmed at your consultation, including if you are still breastfeeding or recently post-partum.
Stress urinary incontinence: leaking with movement, exercise, laughing, sneezing, or coughing. It is one of the most common indications for Emsella, and the one the published clinical research most strongly supports. Results vary between individuals and are not guaranteed. Suitability is confirmed at your consultation.
You will feel tingling and strong, repeated muscle contractions in the pelvic floor area. The sensation is noticeable and different from anything you will have experienced before. Most women describe it as intense rather than painful. Similar to the difference between a hard workout and actual pain. Your nurse can adjust the intensity at any point. Many women read or use their phone during the 28 minutes.
That is the honest question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your individual situation. Your nurse will give you an assessment at your consultation of whether Emsella is likely to make a meaningful difference for your specific concern. If it is unlikely to help, that will be said clearly. Outcomes are not guaranteed. What can be said is that the clinical evidence supports its use for the most common forms of pelvic floor weakness in women, and that the majority of women in published studies reported meaningful improvement.
A single session is $225 (30 minutes). A 6-session course is $1,215, saving $135 compared to individual sessions. An 8-session course is $1,620. A special offer of 6 sessions for $850 may also be available. Contact the clinic to check. All packages include one follow-up maintenance session within 3 months. Full pricing is confirmed before any treatment begins.
