PLASMA FACIAL | BIRKENHEAD, AUCKLAND
Your skin’s own biology, working harder for you.
If your skin has lost some of its quality over time, whether that’s fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, or the early signs of ageing, Plasma Facial takes a different approach. Instead of adding something foreign, it uses the growth factors already in your blood to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity. Outcomes build gradually, with natural-looking changes that develop over weeks. Every session is administered by a Registered Nurse who assesses your skin before recommending anything.

HOW PLASMA FACIAL WORKS
Your own growth factors, supporting skin from within.
A small sample of your blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, which separates and concentrates the platelets and the growth factors they carry. That concentrated plasma is then injected into targeted areas of the face.
The growth factors in plasma signal to the skin cells to support their natural activity, encouraging collagen and elastin response, circulation, and cellular renewal. Because it uses your own blood, there are no foreign substances involved and the risk of an allergic reaction is low.
Outcomes are not immediate. Change develops gradually over four to six weeks as collagen and elastin activity responds. This is what positions plasma as a longer-term approach rather than a temporary one. Plasma works at a deeper level than surface-only skincare can reach.
Plasma is a non-approved medicine in New Zealand, meaning it has not been registered by Medsafe for a specific therapeutic purpose. Plasma is offered as a health service. This is explained at your consultation.
What clients commonly notice
Fine lines and early signs of skin ageing
Designed to support collagen and elastin activity from within, with changes that develop gradually over time.
Dull, uneven, or tired-looking skin
Supporting circulation and cellular activity may contribute to a more even-looking tone.
Loss of firmness and elasticity
Designed to support collagen and elastin activity, which may contribute to firmer-feeling skin..
Skin texture and tone irregularities
Plasma may support skin texture and surface evenness as collagen and elastin activity responds.
Under-eye skin quality

Uneven skin tone
Cellular activity and collagen response may contribute to a more even-looking complexion over time.
HOW WE WORK WITH YOU
Consultation to ongoing support
Plasma Facial is used as part of a broader skin programme, supporting skin quality over time rather than acting as a standalone solution.
PREPARE
Preparing the skin to respond well to treatment. This includes an assessment of baseline skin condition, discussing home care, and understanding any contributing factors that may influence how the skin responds.
STIMULATE
Using treatment designed to support the skin’s own collagen and elastin activity. The aim is to support skin quality gradually and from within, over a structured course of sessions.
SUPPORT
Ongoing care to maintain and build on outcomes over time. This includes home care guidance, scheduled maintenance sessions, and monitoring how the skin responds across the programme.

LIPIDEMIA NOTE

POST-TREATMENT CARE
Looking after yourself after treatment
The days following a Plasma Facial are important. Following these guidelines helps your skin recover well and supports the outcomes from your treatment. If you have any concerns, call us directly.
Don’t touch the area
Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching the treated area to prevent irritation and reduce the risk of infection.
Cool compress if needed
To reduce redness or inflammation, gently apply a cool compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
Avoid anti-inflammatory medication
Do not take anti-inflammatory medication unless necessary, as it can reduce the effectiveness of plasma. Paracetamol is fine if needed.
Gentle cleanser and moisturiser
Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and a fragrance-free moisturiser twice daily. Avoid strong active ingredients for five days.
Sun protection and avoid saunas
Apply at least SPF 30 regularly and avoid saunas and chlorinated pools for 48 hours post-treatment.
No makeup for 24 hours
Avoid makeup and skincare products on the treated area for 24 hours, or until redness and sensitivity have settled.
WHAT TO EXPECT DAYS AFTER
Some redness, mild swelling, bruising and sensitivity at injection sites is normal and typically settles within a few days. If microneedling was included, the skin may feel tight or slightly dry as it heals.
Plasma results develop gradually. Most clients notice the first changes four to six weeks after treatment as collagen production increases. The full result from a course of three sessions typically becomes visible at three to six months.
If you have any concerns after treatment, call us on 09 418 0743 or come in. We would much rather you check in and be reassured than sit with a concern.
CLINICAL EVIDENCE
Referenced clinical studies
The following studies are referenced for transparency and to support informed decision-making. They are published clinical research provided so clients can review the evidence base themselves.
Further clinical evidence available on request. Outcomes reported in studies may not reflect individual outcomes. Individual results vary.
PUBLISHED STUDY
Plasma for photoaged facial skinl
Plasma | Photoaged cheek skin
This study examined intradermal plasma compared to saline on photoaged facial skin. 19 participants received plasma on one cheek and saline on the other in a masked, randomized split-face design. Outcomes were assessed by two masked dermatologists and by participant self-reporting over six months. Participants rated improvements in texture and wrinkles on the plasma-treated side at six months.
As reported in this study, the plasma-treated side was rated as improved in texture and wrinkles at six months compared to saline. Individual outcomes vary.
Alam M, Hughart R, Champlain A et al. JAMA Dermatology, 2018. PMID: 30419125
PUBLISHED STUDY
Plasma in the periorbital area
19 pooled studies | Periorbital wrinkles, pigmentation, and photoaging
This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled data from 19 published studies on plasma for the periorbital area, including 455 patients. Patients were treated on average three times at intervals of 23 days. A meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials reported significantly increased patient satisfaction with plasma compared to saline, platelet-poor plasma, mesotherapy, and laser as adjunct. The researchers reported histologic improvements and blinded-evaluator-assessed rejuvenation.
As reported in this analysis, plasma demonstrated activity across periorbital wrinkle, pigmentation, and photoaging outcomes alongside increased patient satisfaction. Individual outcomes vary..
Evans AG, Ivanic MG, Botros MA et al. Archives of Dermatological Research, 2021. PMID: 33433716
PUBLISHED STUDY
Microneedling combined with plasma
Microneedling + plasma | Facial photoaging
This study compared microneedling alone with microneedling combined with plasma or TCA peeling. 24 volunteers with photoaging received six sessions every two weeks. Outcomes were assessed by photography and punch biopsy for clinical, histometric, and histological evaluation. Combined microneedling with plasma was reported as more beneficial than microneedling alone. No funding or conflicts of interest declared.
As reported in this study, microneedling combined with plasma demonstrated greater clinical and histological improvement than microneedling alone. Individual outcomes vary.

Nature of procedure: Plasma treatment (clinically known as Platelet-Rich Plasma) is an autologous medical procedure that uses your own blood. It is a non-approved medicine in New Zealand, meaning it has not been registered by Medsafe for a specific therapeutic purpose. Plasma is offered at our Birkenhead clinic as a health service to support skin quality.
Balanced expectations: Plasma works by using the growth factors in your own platelets to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity. Outcomes are not immediate and typically develop over several weeks. While many clients experience meaningful improvements in skin texture and tone, individual outcomes vary based on biological factors, age, and lifestyle. There is a risk that the treatment may not produce the desired outcome for every client.
Known risks: Common side effects include localised swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection site. As with any procedure involving skin penetration, there is a minor risk of infection. Because plasma uses your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is low.
Mandatory consultation: A clinical assessment by our Registered Nurse is mandatory prior to treatment. Plasma is not suitable for individuals with certain blood disorders, active infections, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Anything not answered here, come in and ask us directly.
A Plasma Facial uses platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity from within. The plasma is injected into targeted areas of the face and can be combined with microneedling for broader coverage. It is not a surgical procedure. Outcomes develop gradually over several weeks as collagen and elastin activity responds.
Dermal fillers add volume to specific areas of the face. A Plasma Facial works differently. It uses growth factors from your own blood to support your skin’s own collagen and elastin activity. The aim is to improve skin quality rather than alter facial structure or volume. For some clients a combination of approaches is appropriate, and that’s discussed at consultation.
Outcomes develop gradually, typically becoming noticeable four to six weeks after each session as collagen and elastin activity responds. The full outcome from an initial course of two to three sessions is usually visible at three to six months. Plasma is not an immediate fix. It works at a deeper level, with changes developing over time.
Outcomes vary between individuals. Most clients have one to two maintenance sessions per year after completing their initial course, supported by a considered homecare routine. How long outcomes hold depends on skin condition, age, lifestyle, and how consistently the treatment plan is followed.
Common temporary side effects include localised swelling, redness, and bruising at injection sites. These typically settle within a few days. If microneedling is included, the skin may feel tight or slightly dry during healing. Because plasma uses your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is low. All risks are discussed at your consultation before treatment proceeds.
Plasma is suited to clients noticing early to moderate signs of skin ageing, dullness, uneven texture, fine lines, or loss of firmness. Clients also commonly raise texture and tone irregularities and the under-eye area. Plasma is not suitable for clients with certain blood disorders, active skin infections, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.
Yes. Plasma can be combined with other treatments depending on your skin goals. Your nurse will advise what combinations make sense for your skin and what sequencing and timing is appropriate. Some combinations work well together; others are better separated. We work this out based on your specific situation at consultation.
Plasma Facial at Jay’s Medispa in Birkenhead starts from $500 for the Basic tier (PRP injections only), $560 for the Better tier (PRP plus microneedling), and $640 for the Best tier (PRP plus microneedling plus skin booster serum). Pre-purchasing a course of three sessions saves 10% across all tiers. Full pricing is listed on this page.
